In the midst of hectic preparations for their first concert after a hiatus, F.I.R. (Fairyland in Reality) shares with Imagine TV Network the scoop about the working relationship that they share with each other and reluctantly reveal some details about their new album.
By Elaine Xu
The trio from Taiwan - made up of lead vocalist, Faye (飛); keyboardist Ian Chen (陳建寧); and guitarist Real Huang (阿沁) - has been together for a decade and it is easy to assume that their on-stage chemistry is the result of spending time together off-stage, doing seemingly mundane things friends do like going out for a meal or catching a movie at the cinema.
However, it might come as a surprise that they do not spend much time with each other outside of work. Invited as guests on Zhang Xiaoyan's talk show in 2011, the veteran Taiwanese host commented that they allow her to see that it is possible to achieve a goal even when each individual is vastly different and said it is a wonder they have been able to make music together for so many years.
In contrast, S.H.E., another Taiwanese band that celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2012, are releasing their 11th album and have told Taiwanese media that they are living together in a house for three to four days each week to relive their early days of staying in a dormitory.

Not spending time after "work" ends begs the question of how F.I.R. builds and maintains the chemistry they have with each other. It is not altogether impossible because award-winning magicians, Penn & Teller, tells Larry King that they have never been close friends even though they enjoy working together.
Huang, taking on the responsibility of music director for the band's concert for the first time, says, "When it comes to organizing our concert, we work together by delegating responsibilities between the three of us."
"Outside of music, our most recent interaction was taking a grueling fitness class together to prepare for the concert," Faye shares.
Taking a light-hearted jab at Chen, Faye adds, "Besides me, the other two does not exercise regularly; you can say that they are 'forced' to participate in the rigorous physical training. After one session, Chen's legs took a week to recuperate!"
Chen, whom the band members call 'teacher' as a sign of respect, takes the jest in his stride. The renowned producer was the one who recruited Faye and Huang into the band and prior to becoming the leader of F.I.R., he had undertaken executive positions in the music industry, including being involved in the artiste and music development departments and being the director of various music labels.
Steering the focus back to music, Chen replies, "The greatest difference from the F.I.R. we were in the beginning lies in our growth in music - it is our greatest gain and we have accumulated many musical works, whether it be for ourselves, for other artistes, or for charity."
Reflecting upon the band's growth, Huang says, "When we just started out, we were impassioned youth filled with dreams and expectations. Now, I feel that we are more mature and more grounded in reality but at the same time, we managed to keep our passion and drive for music... We have learnt how to plan for the future."
The band's upcoming album will likely be released in 2013 but Chen is reluctant to disclose too much details, only going as far to say that the new album will be a fusion of many elements from different countries.
Huang elaborates a little by sharing that they are exploring the possibility of traveling to different countries to record and produce the songs but maintains that they are still thinking it through.
Tickets to F.I.R.'s concert in Singapore, Light Up the Way, are available from SISTIC website and retail between S$88 to S$158, excluding SISTIC fee.
