After taking a break for one-and-a-half year, F.I.R. (Fairyland in Reality), is in the midst of preparations for their first concert after re-grouping and divulges more details (and some surprises) about their upcoming concert.

The band, made up of lead vocalist, Faye (飛); keyboardist Ian Chen (陳建寧); and guitarist Real Huang (阿沁), has spent the last decade making music together, and Light Up the Way is their first concert as a band since each member took a one-and-a-half year break to pursue individual projects.

Holding the title of music director for the first time, Huang says, "The position looks deceptively easy but nobody in the band really sees the hard work that goes into it."

Elaborating, he shares that when Ian Chen was assuming the responsibility of music director for the concert, he naively thought that a music director only needs to come during the full-dress rehearsal. Now that he is the one doing the behind-the-scenes work, he sees first-hand the long hours and effort that go into making a successful concert.

"Besides spending a lot of time discussing with Faye and Chen the songs to perform for the concert, I spent another three months discussing with the band how we should present the songs."

The concert will feature classic F.I.R. songs but the band will perform them with new music arrangements to keep it fresh for fans who have heard the songs countless times.

Often working late into the night to produce the music and having to dedicate time to communicate his vision to the concert director, Huang shares that although it was big challenge for him, he felt a great sense of achievement in seeing his own growth.

To keep the element of surprise, the exact details of the concert were not disclosed but the first-time music director reveals that some of the songs will be performed in an unplugged fashion.

For a greater contrast, F.I.R. says they have chosen songs that had more complicated forms and named the title track of their 2011 album, Atlantis, as an example of the kind of song they will want to strip down.

With Huang taking on a new role in the concert, Chen chips in to share that he has also been working on his singing chops.

Yet, for all his enthusiasm, Chen is still a reluctant singer.

"Actually, for me, the most 'disgusting' part during the concert is when people keep asking me to sing. I don't get it; I really don't want to sing."

In a past concert, the audience had responded to his singing with much fervor and with Huang, Faye, and the concert director urging him to sing a few songs for the upcoming concert, he has obliged and is painstakingly practicing his new craft.

Faye also has a surprise up her sleeve.

At the tail-end of the interview, the singer expresses a desire to show another side of herself and remarked that she will like to play the drum during the concert.

In response, Huang tells her that if she has serious practice, she can be a decent drummer in two weeks.

All we know is that Faye's statement sparked a spontaneous discussion among the three of them and the band resolved to revisit this idea when they meet again the next day.

We hope Faye does play the drums.
