Taipei, April 19 (CNA) Local celebrities will lead a charity walk on May 15 to raise money for under-privileged families.

The stars are turning out to support a nationwide effort to mark International Day for Families, and urged the public to join the walk with loved ones and remind themselves of the importance of families.

Singer Christine Fan, better known as FanFan, will lead the march in Tainan on that day, while her entertainer fiance Chen Chien-chou will do so in Kaohsiung.

Six other goodwill ambassadors for the event-- F.I.R.'s Faye Chan, Ian Chen, Real Huang, and Vanness Wu, as well as actor Joseph Cheng and Singer Wilber Pan -- will show up either in Taipei or Taichung, where the walk has taken place for the past two years.

Cities hosting the event for the first time include Hsinchu, Chiayi and Hualien.

During the press conference announcing the walk, the stars shared their relationships with their families and what family means to them.

Growing up in a single-parent home with his grandparents, Chen Chien-chou said he believes family members need to express their love for each other in words, which is not as common in the Chinese community as it is in the Western world.

"It is important to tell our family we love them, especially between parents and children. I think it must start with the parents, not the kids," said Chen, who will marry FanFan next month.

Vanness Wu, who is also from a single-parent family, said he is confident he will one day have children who will do good.

"I used to think I would not have children because society is so chaotic. They might just cause more trouble, " said Wu, "But my pastor told me I must believe my kids will surely bless the world and society. That changed my idea. Now I know I must teach my children how to be blessings to the world."

Taiwan's low birth rate and high divorce rate were described as a "national security" issue by Yang Ning-ya, a pastor at Taipei Truth Lutheran Church and the convener of the Taiwan Happy Families Promotion Union.

"Today we want to stand up and share our experiences (of creating loving families) over the past two decades," said Yang.

The walk is co-organized by Taiwan World Vision and the Taiwan Happy
