F.I.R. to conjure up the forces of nature at its upcoming concert here.
BARELY three years after their last concert here, Taiwanese pop group F.I.R. is back with a brand new album as well as a world tour concert.
Signed to Warner Music Taiwan since 2004, the group comprises vocalist Faye Zhan, 29, guitarist Real Huang, 31, and producer Ian Chen, 39.
In Kuala Lumpur last week to promote their upcoming concert and their sixth album Atlantis, the trio said that the Malaysian concert is special to them because Stadium Merdeka, in KL, is an outdoor venue and it is the biggest in the country. The Malaysian stage is set to house some 200 LED monitors to create mesmerising visual effects.
“We are looking forward to it because our previous world tour venues were all indoor such as Taiwan’s Taipei Arena, Singapore Indoor Stadium and Hong Kong’s Coliseum. These were only about 10,000 capacity. We were told that Stadium Merdeka can accommodate some 30,000 at capacity.
“We would have some distance to cover from one end of the stage to the other. We’ve got to train harder to build up our stamina,” said Chen.
Show with a difference: F.I.R., comprising (from left) Real Huang, Faye Zhan and Ian Chen, will be in town to thrill fans at its upcoming concert.
Huang spoke about the concert theme and how each member would play a role that symbolised the three fundamental elements of nature – fire, water and wind.
“We’ve all got our own parts to play. Faye is wind, Ian is water and I’m fire. For my solo performance, there will be some flaming effects. The stage will be elevated and flames will be discharged. It can be a bit dangerous due to the height and also the heat from the flames that would be just in front of me. However, we’ve practised and rehearsed it many times.”
It will be a watery stage for Chen whose marine theme even extends to his musical instruments. “I’ll be playing the piano, complete with a fountain and even a gold fish. When we played at Hong Kong’s Coliseum, fans exclaimed they were surprised to see a piano that appeared to have emerged from the ocean.”
Being the rose among the thorns, Zhan gets to vamp up in floaty outfits that go with the theme “wind”.
“Since western music has a major influence on me, I hope to showcase that at the concert by performing some English songs. One is Angel and another is a song by U2,” said Zhan.
Stage and costumes aside, Chen, who plays the keyboards and usually leaves the singing to the other two, shared that he was more nervous about having to sing for the first time in Malaysia.
“Everybody hopes that we could sing a new Malay song – we composed one for our previous show here – and we hope so too. I’ll probably get some help from a Malaysian singer, perhaps Jess Lee (his mentee who recently became the first Malaysian to win Taiwan’s popular One Million Star singing competition),” said Chen.
Plugging their sixth album, which was released in the middle of last month, Chen enthused about the concept of Atlantis.
“The story goes that Atlantis was a legendary island with lots of treasures. One day, the island suddenly disappeared. For centuries thereafter, many people risked their lives to seek the treasures.
“We have 10 songs to represent 10 different treasures in the album. After you listen to each song, we hope that you’ll find all the treasures and create your own Atlantis.
“Western music lovers will find our album’s sound to be quite familiar as our music has always been more universal with elements of world music and multi-cultural aspects.”
For the upcoming three-hour concert, the band plans to perform up to 40 songs in Mandarin and English.
“We’ll be singing fan favourites, as well as songs from our latest album. We’d love to hear fans sing along with us during the show so you have two months practise,” added Chen.
Finally, they have a parting message for their Malaysian supporters: “We really look forward to meet everybody and get close to more people at the rock zone. If you decide to join us at the show waving glowsticks, the blue ones would be best as we can see you all clearly. And ... we’d love to hear you scream, too!”
F.I.R.’s sixth album Atlantis is available in local music stores nationwide. F.I.R. Genesis It’s My Live 2011 World Tour In Malaysia will play at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur, on July 30 at 8pm. 「我們都有屬於自己的表演時間 - Faye是風, Real是火, Ian是水。我的環節會有火焰放出，而我就在升起的台上，這高度和面前的熱力可能會對我有一點危險，但是我們已練習很多次了。」沁說。
建寧老師的台上將會是水的主題，主題甚至是延伸至樂器上。「我將彈噴泉和金魚結合的鋼琴，當我在香港紅館演出的時候，歌迷都很驚訝，看見好像從海洋中出現的鋼琴。」
Faye會穿飄揚的衣服，代表風。「因為西方音樂對我影響很深，我希望演唱英文歌曲，一首是Angel，另一首是U2的。」
除了舞台和服飾，建寧老師表示自己很緊張第一次在馬來西亞唱歌，因為平時只有飛沁二人負責唱歌。
「很多人都想我們唱一首新的馬來西亞歌 - 我們以前曾創作過一首，今次也想創作。我們想找馬來西亞歌手幫忙，好像李佳薇。」建寧老師說。
正在宣傳上月中發行的第六張專輯，建寧老師十分喜愛亞特蘭提斯的概念。「亞特蘭提斯的故事是關於一個充滿寶藏的小島，後來它突然消失了，很多人不怕生命危險去尋找寶藏。」
「專輯裏的十首歌分別代長了十個寶藏，當你聽完後，希望你能建立自己的亞特蘭提斯。」
「西方音樂愛好者會覺得我們的音樂很熟悉，因為我們的音樂很全球化，有不同的文化範疇。」
在即將舉行的三小時演唱會中，F.I.R.準備了四十首中文和英文歌曲。
「我們會唱歌迷最喜愛的歌曲，亦會唱最新專輯中的歌曲，我們希望歌迷跟我們一起合唱，你們還有兩個月時間去練習。」建寧老師說。
最後，F.I.R.想對馬來西亞支持者說；「我們真的很期待看見所有歌迷，想和各位在搖滾區親近，如果你想加入我們、揮動熒光棒，藍色會是最好的。我們可以看得很淸楚。而且…我們很想聽到你們尖叫！」
